Our school
As part of the internationally recognised European School System, we offer a curriculum recognised across Europe for its high academic standards and focus on language learning.
Our students learn in at least two languages, preparing them to take navigate in an increasingly international world. Beyond academics, we prioritise personal and social development. Our values - respect, commitment, collaboration, responsibility, curiosity, and empathy - are central to daily life at the school.
Every day, we work to create an inclusive and supportive environment where students become lifelong learners and responsible global citizens.
History of the school
Copenhagen is a thriving capital city that, as it grows, continues to attract an international workforce. As the city’s international profile has grown, so has the need for high-quality education for international families. European School Copenhagen was founded by the City of Copenhagen in 2014 to meet this need, providing tuition-free education that supports the city’s ambition to attract and retain international talent.
Since our establishment, European School Copenhagen has continued to expand. The school first opened its doors at Skolen i Sydhavn with two nursery classes and two primary 1 classes, before moving to temporary facilities at Kirsebærhaven in Valby. In 2018, we moved into our own brand-new campus in the Carlsberg City.
In August 2020, the first students started in the upper secondary department and in June 2023, we sent off our first European Baccalaureate graduates into the world. Today, we have grown to have a full school all the way from Nursery class to Secondary 7 with over 900 students in our Danish, English, and French language sections.
Vision, mission, and values
Our vision, mission, and values were defined in 2017 through a consultative process involving staff, parents, students, and the board. These values guide our school community.

Organisation
European School Copenhagen operates within the framework set by the Board of Governors of the European Schools, the Accredited European Schools (AES), the Danish Ministry of Children and Education and the City of Copenhagen. This ensures that our teaching meets both European Schools’ requirements and Danish educational standards.
Our school is subject to an audit and accreditation process by the European Schools system every three years. This ongoing evaluation ensures that our curriculum, teaching, and school culture consistently meet the academic and pedagogical standards required by the European Schools.
The board of European School Copenhagen sets the overall direction for the school. It defines the school’s vision, values and long-term objectives and approves the annual budget and key principles for the school’s activities. In daily life, school management, staff, parents and students work together to turn these principles into a living school culture.
